Fabric Shade Variation

Why do materials vary ?

Shade Variation of Fabrics

Most fabrics for commercial use are produced in batches and rolls of either of 1000 or 500 meters as this is the minimum amount that its economical to produce for fabric manufacturers.

For each batch the fabrics are dyed and using the same recorded chemical composition and same source of water. Manufacturers are extremely careful to produce a like for like match between batches of fabrics.

Some minor shade is still possible however.

Other Reasons for Shade Variation

  • Batches that are produced far apart can have a more pronounced shade variation as the batch would be several generations later than the first
  • Fabrics that have other treatments such as antifungal or FR treatments may look differently until used for a time in the home
  • Exposure to UV also may affect the shade of fabrics

If you have shade variation and your goods are from similiar batches it is likely that this is because of the treatments and/or the goods being in different environments for some time.

Once goods are in the same environment for considerable period minor differences should disappear.
